How Early Can You Start Home Schooling Your Child?

By Danise B. Keasda

Many parents ask when it is appropriate to begin homeschooling their child. These parents do not consider that homeschooling is in fact a natural process which parents typically begin very early indeed. Although it is not often thought of as homeschooling, a great portion of the interactions you have with your child are in fact educational in nature. When you teach your child their ABCs, you are homeschooling them. Parents homeschool their children all the time without even thinking of it.

If you intend on homeschooling your child, it is really never too early to begin. Homeschooling is more than just choosing a curriculum and teaching it to your child. The wonderful thing about homeschooling is that you have the freedom and flexibility to find out what interests your child and then tailor a learning program to their interests and needs. The thing is, nearly all parents do this, they just don't give it that label.

Early homeschooling can be a rewarding experience. You can read books together, count things, visit museums, write stories and simply explore the world around you. Education is far more than what you can get out of a text book; it is about what you can learn about the world from your own observations and experiences within it.

Interact with your child; as you do so, see what your child is interested in. This can help you to tailor your curriculum and assist your child in setting goals for themselves. You can see what kind of pace is suitable for your child and will keep them interested in learning. Homeschooling is something all parents do; official homeschooling is nothing more than an expansion of this strategy which helps parents to prepare their children for life.

The things you teach your child when they are still quite young can give them a foundation for their educational future, be this homeschooling or traditional classroom education. Every time you help your child to learn, even something as simple as writing a letter to their grandparents, you are helping your child build a love of knowledge and of learning which will serve them well for their entire lives.

Our society has some very set ideas about education ? we think of school as a process which begins in kindergarten at the age of five and continues at least until high school about the age of eighteen. Many parents would prefer that their children instead be allowed to learn at their own pace however ? this is why a lot of parents opt to homeschool their children. Perhaps it's best to ask not when to begin homeschooling your child, but rather where to go next; since as a parent, you already homeschool your child!
