Electricity: Lower Your Carbon Footprint

By Jerry D.

The number of pounds of carbon dioxide each individual generates a year is astounding; in the United States the average is 15,000 pounds. This number takes into account the amount carbon dioxide produced when the products and services we use are produced, the fuel we use to travel and the amount of energy we use in our homes. It is however possible to reduce and eliminate this number and live a "carbon neutral" life. Reducing our "carbon footprint" is an important step towards clean Texas energy sources.

Texans could begin lessening the carbon footprint through more efficient energy use. This entails people living their life while using lower amounts of energy. Some ways to go about this:

Switch to appliances and light bulbs that use energy at a more efficient rate. These kinds of light bulbs have been known to save more than 100 pounds of the carbon dioxide in just one year.

Lowering how much hot water is being used. People can change to shower heads that are the low flow variety, more energy efficient hot water heaters, and start washing clothes in just cold water. This can lead to lowering the carbon dioxide by more than 300 pounds.

When people recycle it helps to lower carbon dioxide emissions by about 2,500 pounds. If one is not readily available begin a program for recycling.

Trees do help lower carbon dioxide that is present in atmosphere so plant more of them, for every tree plant about a ton of carbon dioxide is reduced. The trees do more than just take in carbon dioxide, they also shade the buildings from the sun to make them cooler, and blocks the wind for the winter months.

To move closer to the expectations of Texas using clean energy resources, change over to the more renewable resources of wind and solar. Texas and oil have almost always been thought of together, but that is changing, with the fossil fuels disappearing, and the oil production is basically down 73% from where it was in 1972, to search out the newer energy resources. Texas has the cleaner and renewable energy resources that are enough to compensate for the loss of the fossil fuels. The future of the Texas clean energy is in areas of biomass, wind, solar power, and geothermal.

Wind power is a good renewable, more cost efficient resource and is just the thing for a green Texas energy resource. Texas can truly have the ability to become self reliant through using wind power. And they can then sell what they have leftover around their region.

Texas' location is perfect for solar power generation. The state has many long sunny daysperfect for harvesting solar energy. Solar energy requires an investment but the returns make it worth it.

Texas, due to the falling fossil fuel reserves, has numerous wells that are no longer in use at all. These wells could be reworked to produce the geothermal type of energy. This is a good method for Texas to use cleaner energy resources.

Waste given off from landfills and agricultural processes can be converted into biomass energy. Numerous vehicles in various of the Texas cities and towns are powered by biodiesel in the fight to reduce the city's or town's carbon footprint.

Purchasing green power at the individual, city or government level can lead to widespread use of clean Texas energy. Texans can reduce their carbon foot print by building small scale renewable energy sources suitable for businesses or homes. The parts are affordable with wind and solar energy kits readily available. Individuals can also invest money in companies that sell, research and manufacture parts related to clean energy.
