Tips For Studying For Your Calculus Test

By John Bernoulli

You can ace your calculus test if you study hard and follow a couple of hints for studying.

Knowing what will be on the exam is one of the most important things to know before beginning to study. Many students spend time studying things that won't be on the exam. This is a waste of time. You should find out the answers to these questions before you start: what sections from the book will the test cover? Is there other material not in the book you should study? Did you miss class, and can you get the material that was handed out that day?

To find material likely to be on the test, study old homework, quizzes, handouts, and other material from the class. Pay attention to what your teacher has spend lots of time talking about. Teachers often give away exam questions by spending lots of time covering them.

Once you've figured out what will be on the exam, go one step further by trying to guess a few questions that will be on the exam. You don't have to guess the exact question, but try to be as specific as possible. As an example, if you spend several days on related rates problems, you might guess that there will be a related problem on the test. You could say to yourself, "There will probably be a problem like number 24 in section 4 on the test." Once you do this, you can study those problems in more detail.

Finally, study with a friend. This is a very beneficial way to study calculus. One of the best ways to find out whether you understand a topic is to explain it to somebody else. It's often harder than you think! There are many different things you can do with one or two friends. Take turns explaining the solution to difficult problems. Ask questions. Talk about what problems you think might be on the test. Chances are, your friends remember a topic that you might have missed.

Lots of studying is the best way to ace your calculus exam. Make sure you're using your time wisely. With some patience and hard work, you can do great!
