Mulan directed by Tony Bancroft is a Walt Disney productions' animated feature film. The week in which it was released the film was declared as the second highest grosser just behind The X - Files. It was awarded a number of prizes including the Golden Globe Award for the Best Original Score.
Mulan is the fiery young woman who is not running after Princes' but defending his motherland, China against the marauding Huns. She has simple goals - save father, save China and cement a respectable place for women in the traditional Chinese land. The story tells us that the Huns are invading China and each member of the Chinese families' has been encouraged to join the battle against the invaders. Mulan's father too was set to join the Chinese army but Mulan sneaks away with the armor to take his father's place in the Chinese army.
Mulan is not a gory tale of battles and bloodshed. In fact, it is a story of courage, self - reliance and undying love for family and country. The backdrop of the film might be depressing but a child can surely appreciate the underlying meaning of Mulan's exploits and her passion for the nation. Meanwhile, Mushu the dragon is sent by Mulan's ancestors to look after her during the battles with the enemies. The character might seem a little 'extra' at times but it has been added to the film to give some comic relief so that the kids can really enjoy the film.
Eddie Murphy as the voice of Mushu is definitely the show stealer. His dialogue delivery and the very presence of Mushu in the screen makes you sit up and enjoy. The scene where Mushu calls the Huns "a bunch of dirty ass motherf******" is really funny and probably the best scene in the movie.
Mulan is an adaptation of the Chinese legend and is more or less similar to Pocahontas. One question that needs to be answered is - why have American actors as the voices of the characters when you have enough Asians in Hollywood? A minor glitch but should have been avoided.
Overall Mulan is a satisfying film with a good balance between humor, supporting casts, sidekicks and a strong female lead character. One interesting trivia about this animation is that all the artwork for the movie has been done on traditional Chinese Lithographs and in pastel colors. There is one scene in he film which will be etched in the minds of the audience for a long time to come - Mulan is forced to bring an avalanche down on the advancing army and she is forced to ride the peak of the avalanche wave on a horse. Amongst the characters, though, Eddie Murphy only deserves special mention. The others are just ok.
This is an animation not to be missed at any cost. So just go out and rent the DVD or if you are hard pressed for time watch Mulan online free .
