By Jason Stiggins

If you want to become a bartender, you will either have to set your own bar up, or work for someone. If you are setting up your own bar make sure that you have the basics, including liquors, beer, wine, juices and spirits. Won't hurt to have some beer on draft, so grab a couple kegs too.

Having the proper space is key to a good bar. You should have shelves about you to hold glasses and some of the top shelf liquors. Also plenty of space for coolers to chill the bottled or canned beer.

You can always tell a good bartender when they know their drinks. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of drink recipes. Learn the popular ones and get them down pact, as you will more than likely not remember them all, many bartenders have cheat cards or books they can quickly glance at to mix the drink.

One of the best qualities of bartenders are how fast they are able to mix drinks. Learn where all of the bottles are - to where you can literally make drinks with a blindfold on. Do not worry if you are not that fast at first, speed will come with experience.

The amount of time you actually have servicing customers behind the bar is what many employers look for when bringing on bartenders. If you just get out of school but do not have experience, then it may be tough to get a job at first, but whatever is offered to you take it as this will be the start of your resume for the nex place.

A fully stocked bar will consist of Rums, Whiskeys, Tequilas, Vodkas and Gins, along with several wines and other spirits. You should have both top shelf and bottom shelf liquors to add to the variety. Also ensure you have all of the proper juices and other mixers.

You will find that most of the drinks that you are going to be mixing will require a shaker. So make sure that you have plenty of those on hand. Also keep a small towel in your back pocket or somewhere close, as you will be wiping off a lot of spills.

There is plenty of opportunity for bartenders out there as a career. The more places you work and the more experience you get, the better chance you have getting a job at those fancy establishments that tip very well.
