The NCAA has announced that sand volleyball will be the newest college sport. The sport will be for women only and will start in 2010.
Sand volleyball will not go by the name of beach volleyball because there isn't a beach near most of the colleges that will have the sport.
The sport of beach volleyball is growing in popularity more than any other sport in the U.S.A.
Implementing sand volleyball at universities will quickly bring in more fans than many people might think. Beach volleyball was among one of the highest viewed sports of the Olympics.
One problem with this new sport is that many, if not all, athletic directors don't understand that indoor volleyball and sand volleyball are completely different sports and they should NOT have the same coach for each sport.
If this sport is going to be any fun to watch it needs coaches that are qualified for the job.
When sand volleyball brings in more money than indoor volleyball in 2010, it is expected that the NCAA will quickly add the sport for men as well.
