The Dead Zone is a novel by Stephen King, and was released in the year 1979. It tells the story of Johnny Smith, who can see the past and future of people or objects by touching them. Due to its popularity, this book was made in to not just a movie, but a TV show as well.
Some people have a problem with the main character's name, and the producer of the television series didn't even want to use the name Johnny Smith. However, the name does not matter too much compared to the intrigue of the character. Smith proves himself to be a compassionate man who struggles to understand what has happened to him.
It is not until later, when Johnny is in a head on collision with a truck, does his full power emerge. He is in a coma for four and a half years before he awakens, only to realize he has lost the girl he loves, Sarah Bracknell, and must endure a painstaking recovery. It is during his recovery that he discovers his new power, which he sees as more of a curse than a gift.
For Johnny to use his power, he must physically touch an item or a human. When he does, he is hit with a vision related to that manifestation, and all the visions have a significance to them. He first uses his powers to warn his physical therapist her house is burning down, and by doing so manages to save her home.
Although Johnny initially, and never fully does, understand his abilities, he does put them to good use. His first significant achievement is catching Frank Dodd, the long-running serial killer of Castle Rock. Smith also foresees an apocalyptic future, and takes it upon himself to stop it.
Johnny's most destructive enemy is Greg Stillson, who is introduced in the beginning of the novel when he kills a dog after being consumed with anger. In the present day, he has become a charismatic politician who is on his way to the Presidency. After Johnny encounters him at a promotional event, he finds out Stillson will inadvertently destroy the world.
The easiest way for Johnny to succeed is to assassinate Stillson, and his plan ultimately works in an unexpected way. While all of the novel is interesting, the ending is simply amazing and one of King's best. Any fan of Stephen King will greatly appreciate the intricacy and greatness of The Dead Zone.
Christopher Walken plays Johnny in the movie adaptation, while Anthony Michael Hall is the actor on the TV program. The Dead Zone is King's first introduction of the town of Castle Rock, although it was mentioned briefly in short stories. In addition, The Dead Zone has been made fun of on programs like Mad TV and South Park.
