The Benefits of Home Schooling

By Peggy Davenport

Homeschooling is becoming an increasingly popular option with many American families. Not only do you have a controlling power on what is being taught to your child but you could even personalize the course according to your child's specific learning needs and stay away from the pressures of public school education. Still, there are things you need to be aware of that can be harmful to your child if you decide to do this.

Every child needs someone to talk to and someone to play with, and they find their mates in school. What will the other kids think of your home schooled child? Like it or not, children in public schools often think that home schooled children are not in public school because of mental disorders, behavioral problems, or "freaky" parents. This makes your child out of the ordinary, and this may make others make fun or tease him. You need to take care of these problems if you want your child to attend college just everyone else.

Friendships with other children of a similar age must be found if they are home schooled as they cannot be allowed to develop in isolation as this is unhealthy. Here are some tips, which would assist you to give your child the correct direction, if you want him to have a normal and decent social life. The best place to start is your own environment and neighborhood? How many children of the same age as your child live around your home? Do you know their parents? If not, try to get going now. Seek out parents nearby and let them know you have a child that you'd like to set up a play date. Since you are the initiator, it is your responsibility to set the ball rolling, so fix up a party and call a clown to liven things up. You cold start by calling all the kids in the neighborhood with their parents for a party full of kid activities like a ball game, fishing, bowling and more and also be ready to baby sit when called for.

Sporting activities offer the best opportunities where children bond with each other. Since they play together they also spend a lot of time building a bond, and you too get an opportunity to meet other parents. If you child is handicapped or challenged physically which makes it embarrassing for him to make public appearances, then girls/boys scout or similar kid organizations are the best option you have where he could join.

Some parents make the mistake of believing that home schooling their children means they can keep them safe from the outside world but this too is an unhealthy attitude. While it is important to keep them away from dangerous situations, it is also important to let them be exposed to the same influences as other children. Remember your kid is fighting a lone battle with other kids who think that he is from Mars, imagine his predicament in public when he shows his ignorance about what is hot on TV, what other kids are wearing at parties and which bands are making a mark? Without being exposed to mainstream culture, they will have little to talk about with other children and will have a hard time relating to others.
