One Principle Drastically Changes Middle Schools Environment

By Victoria Christ

Young people are faced with so many issues that the need to implement policies, procedures and programs are routine; along with teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. From safe-sex and underage drinking, to anti-drug and anti- bully, the list of issues that require policies continue to grow.

The effect of these programs; rules postings throughout the school, metal detectors and locker searches have had a negative impact on the climate of the schools environment. Too often schools feel institutionalized, cold and sterile. For the first time, public schools are directly competing against charter schools, private schools, and home schools. School administrators across the country are more than ready to give their students and staff a more imaginative, inspiring, and original culture from which to grow.

Steve Haberman is a middle school Principle from Clarion Iowa, who is known for acting boldly on behalf of change. Already,Winner of the Principle of the Year Award, He continues to generate new ideas in creating a better school environment.

"It was so fun designing the wall murals for Mr. Haberman's Middle School," Patrick Conlon, president of SportsGraphics says. "He has a great vision for his school like most principles do, but he aggressively pursues that vision whole heartedly. He inspires everyone he is around, most importantly his students."

Walk into this Middle School and you are greeted with an image of planet earth that you'd swear was painted on the brick, with the words, 'There is a world waiting for you. Your journey has just begun.' Down the hall is another mural which quotes Victor Hugo, 'To learn to read is to light a fire,' with a picture of a magical looking book with sparks flying off the page. Albert Einstein sits from ceiling to floor reminding students and staff that imagination is more important than knowledge.

The family owned business of twenty two years created a gallery of digitally printed wall murals designed specifically for schools looking to bring color and passion back into their learning facilities. They also will work with the school to create their own unique art. It appears when looking at the murals that an artist actually handpaint the mural; only there is no mess, waiting weeks, and no guesswork about what the end result will be. The mural originates as a thin grahic film that is applied with heat to any surface from cinder-block, brick, stucco or drywall. The complete installation time- a few hours.

Haberman's one word to describe the new interior of his building, "Wow! When you walk in, you can tell this place is different. It's exciting to see the student's reactions. After a music concert the other night, I watched parents stroll the building looking at each mural. A kindergarden class actually came over to tour the building."

There's no doubt that being a Principle of a Middle school would be one of the most challenging professions. Leading hundreds of students, teachers, and parents toward the same direction could be an uphill battle. "It's really exciting to see Mr. Haberman, unsatisfied with status-quo, continue to lead so passionately." Echoes the staff of SportsGraphics, a family owned company who have been serving athletic directors and principles long enough to now set trends for high schools and middle schools. They have been called the safety and image specialists for two decades, and see the Wall Murals for Schools as an evolution; now protecting and nourishing the mind.
