The Funny People movie is a comedy drama directed by Judd Apatow, released in 2009. The movie has Adam Sandler playing the lead followed by Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana and a lot more. It is definitely not a movie that you'd like to watch with kids because it has a generous dosage of humour which is sexually crude mixed with some R rated language too.
The movie is in some way, based on the life history of Judd Apatow. Our main lead, George Simmons (Adam Sandler) is a loner who is single permanently. He works his way in to the affluent level by earning himself a fortune as a comedian. Egoistical, abrupt, rude and friendless are words used to describe him quite often. He lives alone by the Pacific in a huge mansion in Malibu. He learns that he has less than a year to live as he is suffering from a blood disorder that is untreatable.
Ira is a stand up, struggling, upcoming comedian who is still floundering to find his true stage persona. On the night that they both perform at the same club, George notices Ira and employees him as his semi-personal assistant. They soon become friends. George begins to establish Ira in his Malibu house. He begins to like and dislike Ira. Making Ira his punching bag, joke writer and nurse. Ira is all impressed with George and ready to do his bidding and please him in any way.
In due course, Ira convinces George to let his friends know of his illness. George declares that he is friendless. Slowly faces from the past start appearing, mostly old comedians, to hang out with George. The scenes of the monotonous, depressing life of George are replaced by scenes from his past which are nowhere close to what he has turned in to today. They depict a George who was fun loving and funny.
The past also shows us about how George fell in love with an actress called Laura who was his one true love and one true regret. His regret was because he had lost her. Laura gave up her career even before it could contribute to making her in to a full fledged star to settle down for a family life with another man (Eric Bana). There is an emotional tear jerking scene involving George and Laura. The character 'Laura' is acted out by Apatow's wife Leslie Mann. Laura's children's role is played by their daughter's in real-life.
