When we try to sit and count the number of female action directors in the United States, we realize that the choice to give Kathryn Bigelow the honor of being the best female action director was completely justified. She was given this for the famous movies she directed in the 90's. Now with her return with The Hurt locker, she is all set to remind people why she has got that title for herself. All the experience of film making is put into this movie.
The immediate reaction when people hear that the Hurt Locker is a film based on Iranian war is that they start thinking its something to do with the politics of that country. This is not a movie of that kind. This movie could have been located anyone under different circumstances. The main spotlight is on the Americans in Iran and their day to day feelings. The cost of living too has been shown to be ever increasing in the movie which is the truth of life as of today.
The movie has one more special aspect which is that it just does not beat around the bush and immediately starts of with the first scene itself that introduces the audience to the unit which disposes the bombs. This is unit is dispatched from Bravo company. These specialists are trained in various fields including Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). In the first scene itself these people are shown disposing a bomb. The disposal team is lead by Sgt. Thompson (Guy Pearce) who depicts himself as a purely cocky man. The team also has a cautious team member Sanborn played by Anthony Mackie and the comparatively new and inexperienced Elderidge, played by Brian Geraghty. This very first scene only can help us gauge what may be the myriad of emotions that we will see for the remaining part of the movie.
Sgt. James takes over the position of Sgt. Thompson in the later part of the movie. At this point Thompson only seems meek and troubled but James on the other hand is enjoying his tryst with danger again. He makes sure that all of the old safety measures are not followed. He implements his own rules and regulation to which Sanborn and Elderidge fall victim later.
As the movie progresses there are a number of incidents that keep taking place. Majority of these incidents seem quite similar to the first scene portrayed. The movie slowly takes us deeper and deeper in to Sgt. James's head to know his obsession with danger.
The suspense is good and the story line is also quite good. The only part where the movie would lose out on is the ending. The ending was totally uncreative and stupid. Instead of the two speeches that were given there should have been something more relevant to the story shown before that.
