Renewable Energy Is The Future

By Alexis Jameson

Renewable energy comes from natural resources, as opposed to non renewable energy which comes from resources that will one day run out. The advantage of natural resources, is that they are typically cleaner to run, making less of an impact on the environment and we do not need to worry about the running out. Renewable energy typically comes from water, wind, the sun and the earth's natural heat, or geothermal energy.

One of the more obvious forms of renewable energy is basically the burning of word to supply heat and light which still accounts for a large amount of energy used around the world today. Hydroelectricity is a market that is constantly growing, supplying almost 20 per cent of the world's electrical power.

Wind power is one form of energy becoming increasingly popular, especially in Europe. This has however, become a controversial form of energy supply. This is because the turbines used to generate the power do not produce enough power unless there are going to be a very large number of them. These "wind farms" take an enormous amount of space and can severely degraded local environment due to sight and sound pollution amongst other things.

Hydroelectricity is undoubtedly the most popular form of renewable energy in the world for producing electricity and some countries rely almost entirely on it. This kind of power simply comes from the force of water, such as water spilling over a dam and generating electricity. Hydroelectricity may also come from the forces of the tides and waves. Although dams are expensive to build, they can produce an enormous amount of electricity.

Solar power is also becoming an increasingly popular form of renewable energy. Solar panels work by way of taking in the sunlight and converting it into electrical power. The only obvious disadvantage to this, is that it relies on a considerable amount of sunlight. Solar power is becoming increasingly popular as a domestic form of electrical supply. Although they are not cheap to buy, any electricity which they generate, which is not used by the household is often then sold back into the grid, making it not only an environmentally friendly option, but it can also save you money.

Another form of renewable energy which is becoming quite popular these days is biofuel. Biofuel comes from organic matter that is died fairly recently unlike fossil fuels which come from organic matter the deceased millions of years ago. These days a number of car manufacturers are building cars which have a dual fuel system, allowing for the ability to use biofuel.

Geothermal energy is also useful and everlasting resource which takes advantage of the natural heat beneath the surface of the planet. Geothermal power stations work by directly tapping into the heat supply of the Earth.

Thankfully, renewable energy is becoming more popular and a number of organisations are starting to capitalize on its massive potential. Many people are starting to realise the importance of using renewable energy resources. One of the fastest growing industries in renewable energy is that of solar power which is growing at an astounding rate of 30% per year at the moment.

It certainly is a bit more settling in is worrying times of environmental destruction and rapidly growing worldwide population that people and governments are at last starting to pay serious attention to the problem.
