Textbooks for higher education are very costly particularly when they are new.

Part of this disproportionate cost can be explained by simple economics, a case of supply and demand. However, there is also a bit of a monopoly on the industry which is controlled by three big guns, which play on the fact that students need to have these books for study purposes. Thus, a wise student needs to be sharp to find the best cheap college textbooks.

Most schools have a second hand bookstore and depending on the state of the textbook, they will establish the cost.

Sometimes, if you look closely, you might be able to find a good deal here, but generally this is not the case so do not hold your breath. Other than extravagant prices, at times the needed stock is outdated or non-existent.

There are various ways in which you can save money and still get hold of your textbooks. First, get the list of textbooks that are required for your semester as early as possible then go down to the college bookstore and browse around as you may be lucky in getting one or two books that are well priced. But don't count on it.

You can ask others that have all ready completed classes, if they want to sell any of their books as many do, so that they are able to get their next set, or because they are moving on.

You can also go online and look for your books, as there are scores of stores where you can save a substantial amount of money on new or used copies of whichever title you need. If you start early enough, you will not have to worry about shipping times, and even if you don't, the cost savings usually provide enough padding to enable expedited shipping.

No matter which option you choose, you should start the process early, explore your options, and be vigilant when looking for cheap college textbooks.
