Should You Get A Biology Degree?

By Lindsay Barnes

If you are in high school and about to graduate, there is no doubt that everyone around you is already eager to hear about your plans for the future. You are already expected to know what you want to major in, which college you want to attend, what career you want to pursue. It's all very overwhelming, especially since you're still trying to get through high school, juggle all your activities, hang on to your job, and maintain good grades in the first place.

Now if you are already well past high school or even college age and have been eking out a living for quite some time now, you might occasionally be hit by the feeling of wanting to try something new, maybe expand your horizons, broaden your knowledge, explore a different career, or go back to school even.

In either one of these situations, you might still be a little torn and confused about how you will go about pursuing your education. There is a multitude of subjects and courses available to you out there, and it can be a fairly difficult challenge to choose one that you are interested in and that could even give you a good future. What you have to do to decide is to figure out what you are really good at what you are interested in, as well as consider which field you have been working in for the past few years, and then choose what you want to study accordingly.

Of course, you might want to take a look at something different altogether in order to step out of your comfort zone. Why not give biology a try? Studying biology is definitely something that is quite different. Think about it. You probably don't know many people who are working to obtain their biology degree right now. Of course, you have to have some aptitude for the sciences, and if you enjoyed biology class, then that's a promising start. If you're a bit hesitant about this field of study, you should consider the fact that having a biology degree opens up lots of doors for you career-wise. A biology degree will allow you to plumb different careers: You can be a teacher, a science writer, you can work in government formulating relevant policies, work for an environmental group or a research facility, or you can even parlay your biology degree into a prerequisite for a career in medicine.

You can obtain a biology degree in your local college, a university, or you can even study online. Choose whichever is most convenient for you and do some research as well on what a biology degree can hold for your future.
