The Virtual Option

By Lyle Jones

Online schools are institutes that allow students to study and receive a complete diploma by studying online. This system was originally designed for students taking up their masters degree, but today, this is available to high school students or those needing to make up credits. It is also referred to as a virtual high school.

There are plenty of online schools available for students from elementary to high school. Online public schools, offers virtual courses that are publicly funded at no cost to resident families. Online schools also include some charter schools.

An online school has a lot of advantages. It offers a lot of flexibility, especially to students whose schedules are erratic and inconsistent because of their work (i.e. actors, singers and athletes). The students are allowed to learn at their own pace so they can either take more time to absorb their lessons, or they can go on a faster pace so they can finish sooner.

Also, parents are more involved in their child's learning, because parents are required to sacrifice some of their time to chart their child's progress. This kind of interaction between parent and child can either hurt or deepen the parent-child bond.

Studying in an online school requires a significant amount of discipline from both the student and the caretaker. The student must discipline himself to complete his work and attend class online, and the care taker must make sure that he does not fail to check on the student's advancement.

Online schools, like any other school has its disadvantages too. Because they study online, students enrolled in a virtual high school often miss out on the social aspect of their schooling. They are not given the chance to join the basketball team, the glee club, and they are not given opportunities to attend academic social gatherings like workshops and school events like the prom and graduation. Students also have to be self disciplined if they want to study in an online school.

Now, if you believe that a virtual high school is the best option regarding your child's education, take the time to study all the online schools on your slate. You'll want to choose a properly accredit virtual high school so that you will not face any problems in the future.
