Don't Make The #1 Scholarship Searching Mistake!

By Monica Matthews

If you are reading this, you are probably on the hunt for college scholarships. Scholarships can be won, if you take a different searching approach from that of your peers! Your fellow students are your competition. It doesn't make sense to do exactly what they do in searching for scholarships. Think outside the box!

Searching for college scholarships on the internet is extremely simple. Enter "scholarships" into the search box, enter, and there you have it, a long list of websites to choose from. That's all you need to do, right? WRONG! This is a mistake that every college bound high school student makes and I will tell you exactly why.

As the internet became the easiest way to find information many years ago, students have become experts at using online resources to search for and find scholarships. Although this may seem like the fastest and easiest way to find scholarship to apply for, using the internet is only one way that scholarships are discovered. Students believe that they are finding all the scholarships they should apply for by simply entering, "scholarships" into their browsers. What they don't realize is that there are a TON of other scholarships out there for them to find and many of them are not listed on the internet! Don't make this mistake!

When students start their scholarship searching, they need to realize that there are many resources out there besides the internet. The sources with the most up-to-date information are the big scholarship listing books. These books list scholarship opportunities by the student's intended college major, hobbies, race, interests, club affiliation, and so much more. Surprisingly, students will find scholarships listed in these books that are NOT found online! Since these books are updated and come out with new versions yearly, their information is more current than the majority of scholarship searching websites found online!

In addition, there are lists of local scholarships found in high school guidance counselors offices (and you don't have to be a student at that school to get their lists!), state sponsored scholarship opportunities, and many more ways to find scholarships.

How did I discover this information? When my own son was a senior in high school, I went through the process of finding and applying for scholarships with him. We utilized the big scholarship listing books and as a result, he won over $20,000 in college scholarships! From the books, we were able to find scholarships none of the scholarship searching websites found for him yet signed up for every single online scholarship searching website that we could find. We used all the scholarship searching sources that you read about here and even more that I did not mention.

After my son had so much success and I began to tell people about the methods we came up with to apply for scholarships, I created http://www.how2winscholarships.com Feel free to visit and learn what you need to win college scholarships!

Benefits Of Home Wind Power

By David Glen

As more and more people seem to "go green" these days, it's kind of tough not to give a little contemplation to what a person can do to make his or her home more energy efficient. It is definitely wise to invest in an alternative energy solution like wind generators since people are projected to downsize considerable costs to aid in the flailing condition of the environment. Fortunately, there are recent developments in the field of renewable energy making it simple enough to craft one's own residential wind power generator.

Those who might want to think about adding wind-source energy to their home will be pleased to discover the advantages. Wind powered generators are a great source of supplemental energy, doing much more than providing the lighting for your home. Being a natural and renewable source of energy, it is both good for the environment and renews itself. This creates less greenhouse emissions than other energy sources. In addition, the prospective power produced by the wind is enough to produce five times of the needed energy for the entire planet.

Second, low maintenance cost is involved in getting a wind power source. Residential wind turbines are very practical and are not that expensive. For instance, wind turbines don't entail much maintenance, so the only costs connected with wind power are those of building and installing the turbines. Subsequently, the costs are pretty insignificant making the wind energy almost free for home use. No wonder it is a great addition to a household's wind power generation system.

Wind powered systems can normally not be the only source of power, since wind patterns are unstable as well as unpredictable. This concern is only minimal, since turbine owners will have a power grid connection in addition to the wind turbine.

There is nothing to fret about the ever-increasing electric bill which is likely to cost people a fortune. Somehow, there will never be a shortage of wind power sources so wind turbine owners can save a lot.

Owners of residential turbine systems will feel freedom from the high price of local utility companies. Particularly for those in windy areas, they should consider a wind powered source on the roofs or towers. The savings may surprise them. Smaller wind turbines (especially the smaller units) have very few moving parts. The lack of regular maintenance keeps cost down, and they are made to last several years before any servicing.

While getting a wind power source is very cost effective, it's also a guarantee that domestic power will not go out since the transformer for the wind generator will help hoard power for later usage. As long as home owners are not using too much electric power, that is.

The best part of owning a wind powered generator is not having to worry about the electricity going out during a storm. Lower electric bills, natural reliable energy and a green home what else can you ask for?

Student Loan Consolidation Basics

By Michael Fleischner

For students attending college or graduate school, paying student loans is a key concern. When considering how you are going to pay back your loans, you have many options available. If you are like most students, you have more than one loan. Student loan consolidation is a great way to simplify your repayment process.

Loan consolidation is essentially the process of taking multiple loans from different providers and paying that loan with a single umbrella loan from a single provider. There are significant benefits when you take this approach. The result is a lower payment amount and simple repayment process.

When taking advantage of loan consolidation, you have a single lender and one monthly payment. One of the benefits of a consolidated loan is that you often have a few repayments options to chose from. Make sure you research these options and decide which ones work best given your current ability to pay.

Student loan repayment options include standard repayment. This is where you make a fixed sum payment. Most student loan repayment periods are for ten or fewer years. If the monthly amount is too much for your budget, a second option is to extend your payment for a longer time period of time. The last repayment option is to pay a graduated amount during the repayment process, stepping up about every two years.

With selecting the graduated repayment option, your payments are made over an extended period. Keep in mind however that payments are not the same over the life of the loan. Every couple of years your payment amount increases. This graduated payment schedule is right for individuals who need the lowest payment amount when repaying their loans.

Keep in mind that once a loan is consolidated your interest rate is fixed (except in the graduated repayment option). This means that you will be expected to make your payment each and every month. This is incredibly important when you are repaying a consolidated loan. Not repaying in a timely manner can result in default and a damaged credit score and an inability to acquire future loans.

A great way to make your payments is by deciding on the right repayment option to meet your need. One popular method is to set up a direct withdrawal from your account every month. This automatic process simplifies your payment and ensures that you never miss a payment. The sooner you set up the automatic repayment process the easier it will be to make your monthly payments.

When you start to repay your school loans, consider student loan consolidation. Loan consolidation makes the repayment process easier to manage and provides flexibility. Set up and automatic repayment program and find a well known lender who can work with you as your ability to pay changes over time.

Most Often Forgotten Dorm Room Items

By Gary Knight

Staying in a college dorm is the first time that many young people live away from home. Though most manage to get by easily enough in the often very basic circumstances there are several items that can help to make staying there less hassle.

- Supplies For Cleaning. Student dorms often become somewhat dirty in a short space of time, especially if there is a lot of socializing taking place. General cleaning solutions, sponges and paper towels are helpful to keep on hand.

- Power Strip / Extension Cable. In most cases, a single dorm room has four to six electrical outlets. With a computer, a television, cellphone charger, etc., there are often more items requiring electricity than outlets. Additionally, it's not uncommon for them to be located near each other or in less than convenient places so purchasing an extension cable provides more flexibility to set-up the room as desired.

- First Aid Kit / Bandages. Though the standard mentality of college students is that they are indestructible, occasionally a paper cut, shaving knick, or skinned knee needs a little medical care. A basic first aid kit, complete with cold medication, burn ointment, and bandages is a neccesity for any college student.

- Personal Printer. Most colleges offer computing areas for students to work on projects and to print their reports and assignments. However, such areas are often very busy and are restricted to daytime hours of availablity. Having the option to print-out what you want, when you want with a personal printer is much less hassle. Large electrical stores normally offer several basic printers at discounted prices that perfectly fulfill a college students printing needs.

- Spare Bed Linens. The item that takes up the most space in a dorm room is the bed. With it being the largest object in the room, it is often made use of for things other than sleeping, with it also becoming a couch, a shelf, or a drying rack, amongst other things. This can quickly lead to spills, stains, and dirty sheets that need to be washed. Keeping spare sets of linens, including a comforter or quilt, sheets, and pillow case, makes going to sleep more enjoyable.

- Tools. Things get broke within dorm rooms and when they do often the maintenance men don't come quick enough or say that it's your responsibility, not theirs. Having basic tools, such as a screwdriver and hammer, makes little accidents less frustrating.

Top 5 Cleanest Cities in Canada

By Amy Nutt

Canada has a number of world-recognized clean and green cities. Its major cities pride themselves on efficient waste management services, enviro-educational programs and community spirit. The cities offer the green and blue bin solutions to ensure waste is managed. Calgary, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto are considered the cleanest cities in Canada.

Calgary - The railway of the future. Calgary may be known for its natural resources, but its Light Rail Transportation system sets it apart from its other Canadian cousins. A well-planned, grid-like structure, the system is compact and environmentally friendly.

Though residents are actively encouraged to recycle, Calgary's innovative waste management program has been implemented to sort biodegradable and recyclable material that people may have missed. Such conscientious action by the council has led to the creation of the Clean Calgary Association, which aims to instill a green ethos in the city's residents. Interested participants can attend environmental education workshops, which provide excellent networking opportunities to strengthen business and community relationships.

What makes Calgary the cleanest city in Canada? Residents are given the impetus to act locally while thinking globally; that is, they are encouraged to spread the eco-message further afield.

Ottawa - A world leader in Spring Cleaning More than 65,000 Ottawa residents joined forces to make Spring Cleaning the Capital 2009 the most successful campaign to-date! Earlier this year community volunteers united to clean up 1,000 of Ottawa's parks, roadways and green spaces. Participants helped collect almost 112,500kg of waste from these areas, restoring them to near pristine condition. Ottawa council invests $7.9 million each year in cleaning up litter - that's a lotta cash! Ottawa council also recognizes the importance of keeping cars off the road by encouraging people to skate to work in the winter.

Montreal - A city under clear skies. Recognizing the importance of clear skies, Montreal has implemented a significant smog-reduction program. The program is largely aimed at motorists and encourages them to leave their cars at home, or to make changes to the way they drive in order to positively affect the air environment. They also encourage residents to make their homes energy efficient by reducing the unnecessary use of appliances, using fluorescent lights, and reducing the use of toxic chemicals.

Vancouver - a green leader Vancouver is one of the few Canadian cities without a major freeway running within its CBD. It is famously regarded for its green ethos, as it encourages its roof-top gardens and use of public transport. In February 2009 mayor Gregor Robertson launched rebates on car share initiatives and sustainable commuting in an effort to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world. We salute you Vancouver.

Toronto - Clean Canada in 2010. Recent industrial action has forced Toronto residents to carefully consider their waste management plans. Undeterred by the recent strikes, the city will be in the national spotlight in 2010 when it hosts the Clean Canada expo. The expo will feature a wide variety of exhibitors offering waste and green solutions for businesses and homes.

The city encourages its residents to compost, providing them with extensive training in how to effectively reduce household waste, duct lleaning in Toronto . The city also offers the Green and Blue Bin solutions to ensure all waste is effectively managed.

Choosing Eco Clothing For The Fashionable Person

By Denise Caly

If you want to start making a difference for the environment, it's time to start living green. This will mean making active changes in nearly every aspect of your life. What it does not mean, however, is that you will need to sacrifice style to do this. By purchasing eco clothing for the fashion conscious person, you will be able to spend your money in a way that will encourage more designers to start making green clothing themselves.

There are many different natural resources which can all be used to help make clothing. Some of these resources are renewable and sustainable, while others will start to be depleted. Since you can play a factor into which types of materials can be used, you can easily start making choices that favor sustainable resources instead of ones which will begin to run out.

When you stop to consider that environmentally friendly resources will be ones that use organic or recycled products, you can start to see what type of choices you will need to make. This can turn into you having the best designs and textures in your clothing without using too many non-renewable resources to make them. It's just one simple way that you can start making a difference.

As you start to make smarter purchases of an environmentally friendly nature, the world of fashion will begin to take notice. This will encourage these fashion designers to start making clothing which is more green and this wave will spread through the entire world of fashion. While some designers are already taking steps to be more green, only when there is truly a demand will changes be made.

Eco clothing does not mean that one is going to be wearing boring, ugly clothing. Outfits made of natural and recycled materials can still come in many different forms and feature bright, vibrant colors. Making sacrifices for a green lifestyle does not have to affect your personality and sense of taste in clothing. It only means that you will need to be a little bit more careful when you start to make choices based on where and what you are buying.

One easy way to make wearing green clothing even more exciting is by personalizing it. You can make alterations to the design and the fabric by adding your own buttons or sewing on small patches. Anything that you enjoy can be used. This will give you the chance to recycle elements from other pieces of clothing and still have things to wear that you love.

Green clothing is also made without cruelty to animals. Instead of breeding animals to get leather or using other animal resources, clothing is made using only natural elements. This can still give you functioning pieces of clothing that aren't made at the expense of animals. You should be able to feel proud about any pieces of green clothing.

The choice to start living in a more sustainable way is a noble one. You should find eco clothing for the fashion conscious, however, to ensure that you are not sacrificing your personal taste when making this lifestyle change. Looking good and treating the Earth well are not two things which are mutually exclusive.

Profile of the Con Man

By John Berling Hardy

At 10am one Tuesday I am drinking my coffee in Chris's apartment while he sits reading the paper. As he reads he smiles to himself before passing it over to me, open at a particular page, and asking what I think of it. I follow his gaze and read a short advert calling for new investors to support a business venture. It is clear from the wording that whoever placed the ad is not a native English speaker. I look up at Chris and shrug, telling him there's nothing out of the ordinary there. "Why, what should I see?".

"What I see," Chris replies "is an investor; a foreigner; probably Chinese or Arab. He's looking to find a local silent partner." The sub-text in Chris's mind, which is not shared with me, is that he has spotted his next mark.

Of course, Chris would never speak of himself as a con man. Officially he's a respectable guy who knows how to get things done. He works out of an office in a law firm with a picture of himself meeting the Governor-General hung proudly on the wall. He regularly entertains visitors in that office, and takes them to meet the partners. From all of this you might assume Chris is a lawyer, but in fact his presence is only allowed for by the firm in the expectation that he will attract new custom for them.

Chris is a Player. He is at his most successful when it comes to making - or rather, taking - money from those who have inherited trust funds. Chris will be the first to tell you he is neither a liar nor a thief, and this is technically true, but it doesn't stop him manipulating his clients and their circumstances to get the results he wants. Chris does not share the anxieties which most of us experience in everyday life. His only goal is to maintain the comfortable existence he has, and his has no interest in nor attachment to anyone or anything else.

A con man is the master of misdirection. He creates rapport, and credibility through an effusive, engaging manner and strategic name-dropping. As we come to like him and be impressed by his impressive array of connections, we find ourselves swept up by his charm and energy. At the same time, we are flattered by the attention that this 'important' person is paying us. He speaks with a pleasant, even cadence. He speaks, and he speaks and he speaks. Before we can fully absorb one piece of information, we are already presented with another. In this way, we are kept continuously off balance; but we do not know it. This is the art of the con.

The con man is a maelstrom of energy, and we cannot long remain immune. We are swept along as the claims he makes turn from absurd to outrageous, but we do not care; it is the style of delivery which has us enthralled, and there is no easy escape. As time goes by and we invest more and more of our attention in this impressive personality we begin to become dependant. We begin to think of the con man as our friend, our ally, our "go-to guy". The more we invest in the trickster at this stage, the more frustrated and hurt we will feel when he eventually springs his trap, takes us for all we have, and leaves us without ever saying goodbye.

This, then, is the anatomy of the con. Be it a cult leader, a salesperson, a stock promoter, or a politician, the basic template is the same. It is insultingly simple; but it works.

First, Amazon pioneered online bookstores so people can purchase books without visiting the bookstores. Then, they redefined reading by enabling people to read books without the books through the Kindle ebook reader. And if those privileged with the initial Kindle are still gaga over it, wait till they catch sight of the Kindle 2. In a nutshell, the Kindle 2 is the original Kindle with a big step further into the future of reading.

The Amazon Kindle 2 electronic reader is engineered to download blogs, books, newspapers, and magazines. Periodicals are automatically sent to the device. Technology has afforded us with a very practical alternative to holding a book, magazine or other reading material and turning from one page to another. The Amazon Kindle is indeed powerful and is only surpassed by its successor the Kindle 2.

There are several brands of electronic book readers to choose from in the market. Having that said, don't bother to look beyond the top of the pack as many of the rest are still in beta. By far the two most proven brands are the Amazon Kindle and Sony PRS. Both have generated running series and are already into their latter models. The consensus though, is Amazon with its Kindle 2 is fast drawing away from competition with Sony's flagship PRS - 700 a distant second.

The most distinctive feature of the Amazon eBook Reader is the Whispernet. This is a wireless service for acquiring content and some degree of internet access. It also carries the Whispersync feature which links other Kindles and its associated devices such as the iPhones and iPods plus others in the future. When you purchase the Kindle 2, Amazon will pay for the lifetime connectivity of the particular e-reader. The network is 3G-based so it doesn't have to be in a hotspot to operate.

Kindle ebooks save money too. Savvy readers would realize that Amazon subsidizes its Kindle book sales and provides free sampling of e-books so you are never mistaken about buying a book. That may be string attached to sell its electronic book reader but the bottom line makes sense at the end of the day. Even for occasional readers, this should be a no-brainer. That's on top of all the other good stuff it brings when you Buy Kindle 2.

A Capitol University

By James Pynn

The District of Columbia, comprised of land gifted to the federal government from the venerable states of Virginia and Maryland, has never ranked highly in terms of cultural impact. Though the legislation from the District affects every citizen, our collective cultural identity has been shaped by such megalopolises as New York City and Los Angeles, and to some extent by cities like Boston, Miami and Chicago. The District is the capitol and for most people little more than that.

There has always been a desire to make the capitol more culturally relevant. George Washington personally lobbied for the construction of a university in the District of Columbia. Though he was unable to raise the necessary funds or wrangle the Congressional legislation to erect the university in his lifetime, his hopes were realized in 1821. During the tenure of President James Monroe, the foundations were laid for a capitol university.

In 1824, the first commencement took place, marked by the presence of such luminaries as President Monroe, John C. Calhoun, Henry Clay, and the Marquis de Lafayette among others. Indeed this ceremony in and of itself shrouded the university in a cloak of prestige few other institutions have enjoyed. Though the university enjoyed a robust enrollment for many years, it was forced to close when the Civil War broke out. For the duration of the war it was used as an Army barracks.

As it was a significant factor in the life of George Washington, and indeed a good many of the Founding Fathers, the capitol university has become a repository for the belief and iconography of Freemasonry. To be sure, the universitys charter specifically states it is to formally recognize the contributions of Masons in the United States. The architecture of the university prominently displays the universally recognized symbols of Freemasonry, namely the compass and square, as well as the all-seeing-eye of Providence.

From the dreams of our First Father, this university has become a thriving reality. Indeed, it even bears his name. As a private, coeducational, non-sectarian institution it is renown for its international affairs curriculum, as well as its international affairs, political science, and political communications programs. Its graduate programs in engineering, international affairs, medicine, and law rank amongst the most well-regarded in the county.

Gold Recycling and Environmental Advantages

By Alyssa Rogers

In 2000, a major environmental disaster occurred which hardly made the headlines internationally and except for those involved in the gold recycling and refining business, it made little impression on the world outside of Romania where the incident occurred. During the night of January 30th, a dam gave way and flooded the valley below. The water brought with it well over 100,000 cubic meters of heavily contaminated water laden with 120 tons of cyanide delivered directly into the Romanian river network.

Where did all of this contamination come from? The dam waters were utilized by a gold refining plant which took gold bearing ore and extracted the precious metal from it. Many people are completely unaware that the gold refining process requires such environmentally damaging agents to obtain the metal but sodium cyanide is one of the most popular and lethal substances used to extract gold from gold ore.

In addition to sodium cyanide, other reagents are used including large quantities of zinc which then requires sulfuric acid to clean that out of the solution before the gold (and silver) can finally be removed for smelting.

Zinc is highly toxic and sulfuric acid is responsible for the deaths of many European forests due to acid rain in which sulfuric acid is the key active component. The final gold and silver sludge which is created is smelted into metal ingots which are very pure - 99.9999% pure. This requires huge amounts of energy to achieve further increasing the carbon footprint and environmental impact of gold and silver processing. Now let's contrast extraction of the precious metal from base ore with recycling gold and silver.

Extraction of pure metal from existing gold bearing materials, usually jewelry but also other components such as computer components, results in a huge environmental saving. There is very little use of highly toxic materials and those which are utilized are done so in highly contained and safe locations. There is a huge difference between a gold ore operation using an open pit filled with sulfuric acid and a factory process which is recycles the sulfuric acid it is using for reuse over and over. In addition, there is a much reduced use of toxic extraction processes as the gold and silver metals are already in a highly purified state and are simply encased in a different form such as a ring or as a component on a computer motherboard.

Energy levels required to smelt existing gold and silver back into an ingot for reuse is also greatly reduced. Huge amounts of energy are required to further refine and separate gold and silver from the "sludge" created by ore extraction but existing gold and silver jewelry simply needs to be melted to be reformed into ingots.

Recycling gold and silver is very cost effective in financial terms but the environmental impact is greatly reduced and it is far more efficient and beneficial to recycle gold rather than extract it from the base ore. This in turn allows relatively high prices to be paid for second-hand jewelry especially in the current climate where gold and silver are in demand.

The Top 8 NCAA Football Teams Entering 2009

By Jay Washburn

8. Ole Miss to compete for the SEC. I really like this team this season because of a relatively weak division (save for Florida), and the fact that I do think they can actually beat the Gators, though not every time out. Snead seems to have Tebow's number and I see this team making the Sugar Bowl.

7. Virginia Tech. Things were looking great for Virginia Tech before losing their running back for the entire year. Coming off a disappointing season last year (9-4), the ACC is weaker this year than last. I can't see this team finishing at the #7 spot and they have a tough road ahead of them.

6. Ohio State. I could see Ohio State back in the national title game, assuming the team wins the games it's supposed to. Terrell Pryor will do some great things for this team, and if they don't make the BCS championship, a Rose Bowl is in the cards.

5. Alabama. Yet another team that could easily compete for the BCS championship. Alabama should coast through most of the season, save for its match-ups against LSU, the Vols, and the Rebels. While an undefeated season is unlikely, the team's finish shouldn't be too far off.

4. Pac10's - USC. Big favorites to punch their ticket early to the BCS title game, pending no unexpected surprise losses to Stanford or Oregon State. Their toughest game will be against Ohio State early in the season. Their issue will be adapting a young offense to the pressure of prime time and running up the score board. There is no reason they should play in any other bowl game outside of the BCS championship unless they cant win the voters over from the Big 12. In that case they will fall to the Rose Bowl against the Big 10 winner which will probably be Ohio State, De Ja Vue anyone?

3. Oklahoma. The battle between the Sooners and the Longhorns will be fierce this year, and either team could come out on top when all is said and done. Some great receivers, Bradford at QB, and maturity should make the Sooners a top force all season. While their schedule is a bit demanding, the hardest game (and only one they should be favored to lose) is the one against Texas in the sixth week of the season. I see the winner of this game in the title game.

2. Texas. This team is favored to win the Big 12 and easily one of the best teams in the nation. With Colt McCoy returning at quarterback and a top notch defense, there are few better teams (if any) than than the Horns.

1. Florida. As long as Tim Tebow is on the team, there's no reason to discount this team's ability. Almost all of the entire team last season (besides Harvin and Nelson) is back for another season, and Florida has the experience and the talent to go all away. The Gators are the favorites entering the season.

By far the two most proven brands are the Amazon Kindle and Sony PRS. Both have generated running series and are already into their latter models. The consensus though, is Amazon with its Kindle 2 is fast drawing away from competition with Sony's flagship PRS - 700 a distant second.

The most distinctive feature of the Amazon Kindle Electronic Book Reader is the Whispernet.

To Buy Kindle 2 save money too. Savvy readers would realize that Amazon subsidizes its Kindle book sales and provides free sampling of e-books so you are never mistaken about buying a book. That may be string attached to sell its Kindle Electronic Book Reader but the bottom line makes sense at the end of the day. Even for occasional readers, this should be a no-brainer. That's on top of all the other good stuff it brings.

College Life: Good Rules Make Good Roommates

By Robbi Hess

Your bags are packed and you're off to college. A new environment, away from home (perhaps for the first time) and you're moving in with a stranger! Thrilling changes, right? But what if you and your roommate don't mesh? She's a night owl, you're an early bird? A neatnik and a not-so-tidy person? Will you make it through all the changes? With some planning and compromise, yes you can.

1. The refrigerator - will you share one or have your own? Your own makes divvying up space and making certain neither of you scarfs down the others' leftovers a non issue. If you have to share, consider having designated shelf space. Your shelf is your food, the roomies shelf contains stuff you don't touch.

2. You call that clean? When you're done cooking and eating, when will clean-up take place and who's going to do it? A good rule: You dirty it, you clean it. You may have to come to an agreement on how long after the cooking and eating before the kitchen needs to be picked up. An hour? Two? Three days? Discuss it before hand and problems hopefully won't surface.

3. Overnight guests or visitors who stay until the sun comes up? Set ground rules on how long visitors are welcomed and how many visitors you want crowding the room at once. If you have a big exam and need some extra zzzz's, ask the roommate for extra consideration for an early lights out. Rules for overnight guests should be hashed out from the get-go.

4. Nothing says a good night's sleep like dead silence, right? Maybe not. If you need noise and your roommate needs silence, you may need to sleep with earphones in. Can you only fall asleep with the white noise of the television? Discuss it up front to avoid problems later.

5. What's mine is mine. How do you feel about your roommate rummaging through your drawers, perhaps wearing your clothes? How about borrowing paper or ink because their printer ran out? May sound far fetched, but probably isn't. Talk about ownership and boundary issues off the bat.

With all the changes you're going through in adjusting to your first year in college, making your dorm room your haven can be done. It might just take some compromise and conversation before issues arise.

Go Green With the Way You Clean (And Save Money in the Process)

By Cari Webbe

When it comes to using green cleaning products as a way of helping our environment, there is a wide range of opinion. Many of us think that they are just too expensive to both with, but in truth we are probably wasting our money on the products we currently use.

All it takes is a few simple ingredients, and you can clean your whole home. Not to mention the fact that you could even make green cleaning products yourself from scratch - for a fraction of the price! It really isn't too hard to take the first steps to go green.

What's Wrong With Traditional Cleaning Products?

There is actually no law forcing manufacturers to label all of the ingredients that go into our cleaning products, which is why it's very shocking to hear that a number of the ingredients haven't even been tested for safety on humans!

And, what's worse, is that we are indirectly taking these products into our system. For example, when we spray our surfaces we breathe the ingredients in. And we also absorb all of the ingredients of our laundry detergents through the clothes we wear every day.

As if the health risks aren't enough, these chemicals quickly enter into water streams, killing life and contaminating the water we drink. The bleach you use, and the many other toxic ingredients in our cupboards, just aren't necessary when it comes to keeping our homes clean!

A Healthy Alternative

You don't have to buy the most expensive products to take steps to go green today. Start by using up the products you do already have, and saving the plastic spray bottles. These can then be used to make your own cleaning concoctions.

There are a number of extremely simple options, such as a wash of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to get rid of mold. Or you could use lemon juice as an antibacterial cleaner. So simple!

You might not have the time to create all of your cleaning products from scratch, and if that's the case then try buying eco-friendly brands like eCover. While this may cost more, you can save money by buying in bulk. There are also natural laundry options that can last around a thousand washes, ultimately working out a lot cheaper than your current detergent!

If you want to go green you don't have to change everything straight away. Start with your laundry, then move onto another area of your life. Before you know it you'll never know why you relied on those toxic cleaning products!

Easy, Safe Maintenance for Your Bird Bath

By Trey Casselman

A bird bath can be just the decoration to turn your yard or garden from dull to delightful. If your bird bath is filled with scummy water and green algae, however, it is less than appealing for both you and your bird visitors. Keeping your bird bath clean is essential, but it doesn't have to be expensive or time-consuming to maintain. You can keep your bird bath sparkling clean without the use of bleach solutions or other chemicals.

The best way to keep the green, organic scum from mucking up your bird bath is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Sometimes that's easier said than done, but in this case it really is pretty simple. There are all-natural products available that won't harm the birds or require constant maintenance.

Bioverse makes a Birdbath Water Cleaner that uses beneficial bacteria and enzymes to prevent stains, mineral deposits and organic build-up. The product reduces the excess nutrients in the water that causes the problems.

Before using the Birdbath Water Cleaner, it is a good idea to give your bird bath a good scrub. After emptying the bath, use a scrub brush or sponge along with a small amount of water. If you cannot remove the stains, try using a solution of water mixed with a bit of vinegar. There are also a few soy-based cleaners available that are safe for birds. Harsh chemicals, such as bleach solutions, should not be used. Even some mild detergents can be harmful to birds, so plain water is your safest bet.

You will want to disinfect your scrub brush or sponge (or just toss it). If you want to keep it, let it soak in some lemon juice and hot water for 20 minutes. Then spray a little Lysol on it, before giving it another rinse with water.

After scrubbing the bird bath, give it a good rinse, fill it up with clean water and add Bioverse's Birdbath Water Cleaner. Simply place the dispenser in the middle of the bird bath. The beneficial enzymes and bacteria will be automatically released for up to 30 days. Just one of these dispensers can keep up to seven gallons of water clean, but also can be used for the smallest, one-gallon bird baths. Just be sure that you keep adding fresh water to the bird bath, as some is sure to evaporate over time.

In order to keep the water clean and clear, simply remove the old dispenser after 30 days and drop in a new one. It is just that simple to keep your bird bath pristine and sparkling fresh. Your feathered visitors will appreciate the clean bath, too.

Bioverse also has all-natural products for Koi ponds, fountains and larger water features. Don't use chemical algaecides and other products that aren't eco-friendly on your water when you don't have to. Whatever type of water feature you have - large or small -- can be healthily maintained with ease.

The Top 8 NCAA Football Teams Entering 2009

By Jay Washburn

8. Ole Miss Rebels. I see this team starting out at #8, and Jevon Snead should be a driving force in 2009. He also has Tim Tebow figured out, so anything can happen in a game against the Gators. Don't sleep on the Rebels.

7. ACC's - Virginia Tech. The Hokies had a good chance to repeat as ACC champs until they lost their starting HB for the season. They had a mediocre season finishing 9-4. This season 9-4 might win the ACC but will be no where near close to be in the top ten or the National Title game. They will need to beatAlabama, Miami, Georgia Techand Nebraska to even be consideredfor the title which they will be lucky to beat 3 of the 4.At best, Virginia Tech will fall to the Gator Bowl against the Big East or Notre Dame.

6. Ohio State Buckeyes. This is a team that could definitely compete for the national title if things fall the right way. They have a pretty tough schedule, but some easy match-ups to go with them and Terrell Pryor should be a major force this season. I see this team making the Rose Bowl at worst.

5. Alabama. It looks like Alabama has a good shot at the national title game this season. The only real things that stand in the way are LSU, Tennessee, and Ole Miss. Still, this team could easily finish with two losses or less.

2. Big 12's - Texas. Texas Longhorns are the other big favorite to represent the Big 12 in the title game. They have essentially the same schedule as Oklahoma and are returning most of their starters on offense, including standout QB Colt McCoy,and defense. Week 6 against Oklahoma will determine which bowl game they will reserve in January, the Orangeor BCS title game. Likely to lose one game in an upset.

1. SEC's - Florida. Florida Gators are the favorite to win the BCS titlefor many reasons. 1. They are returning 11 starters on defense and all 11 backups. 2. They are returning 9 of 11 starters on offense with the exception of Harvin and Nelson, both lost via NFL. 3. They will start in the number 1 position and have a relatively weaker schedule than last season. As long as they remain undefeated, they will play the Big 12 winner or USC. 4. They have Tim Tebow. 5. They avoid Alabama and Ole Miss until the SEC title game in Atlanta. Their toughest games of the season will be going to LSU and punching Lane Kiffin and Tennesseein the mouth for his rude allegations. They will walk to the national title game after week 5.

Haliburton Forest; Nature, Beauty and Wolves

By Dave Bouskill

Just three hours north of Toronto way up in Central Ontario is one of the most unique and beautiful destinations in the province. Haliburton Forest is a nature lovers dream. A place for hiking, mountain biking and canoeing in the summer and cross country skiing, ice fishing and dog sledding in the winter. But it is the Haliburton Forest Wild Life and Reserve that makes it so special.

Treat yourself to a rare view of a pack of wolves that live on a 15 acre reserve. The Haliburtan Forest is 70,000 acres of protected forest and its inhabitant. This pack of wolves has 15 km all to themselves free to live out their lives with as little human interaction as possible. There are wild packs of wolves Haliburton as well, but this pack are descendants from two captive wolves dating back to 1977.

Originally in Michigan, a photographer raised two wolf pups to photograph and study. As the years past the pack grew and eventually he could not take care of the wolves alone. Haliburton was scouted and chosen as a home for the semi-domesticated wolf pack and in 1992 they were moved to live on as a protected pack in as close to their natural environment as possible.

You can visit the centre year round and it is worth it to take a couple of trips to see them roll in the snow during the winter season or to see them bask in the sun during the summer. Viewings are not guaranteed as the wolves are free to roam wherever they choose. Tourists can only view the wolves from inside a glass enclosure overlooking the feeding area, but the viewing platform is built in an ideal location where the wolves receive optimal sunlight for sunbathing. You are asked to remain quiet as you observe the wolves go on with their day. Their daily lives are disrupted as little as possible.

It is also a good location because the wolves are fed from this point. Their diet consists of mainly beaver, but sometimes they are fed deer as well. The wolves are never fed live animals, most come to the centre as victims of being hit by traffic or by local hunters bringing them in. The wolves treat the meat as a kill however and they tear at the animals with wild fury.

You will learn a great deal about the hierarchy of the pack, ask as many questions as you like. The Alpha Male runs the clan along with his chosen Alpha female. They are followed by the Beta male which is second in command and then the rest fill out the list until the poor Omega wolf. It is difficult as a human to watch the Omega. It is the weakest of the pack and it is severely bullied by the other wolves. It is the last to eat and it stays to itself while the rest of the pack sleeps and plays together.

The sanctuary does not intervene as this is the way of the wolf and it is not for we humans to decide how they should live. Eventually, the Omega will be killed by the pack or it will go off by itself to die, sometimes they become so sick that they need to be euthanized by staff veterinarians. It is difficult to witness, but to take the omega away will only make room for another Omega to be chosen and it would disrupt the whole system of a wolf pack. Eventually, one of the younger Beta Males and Females will overtake the Alpha's and the cycle will continue.

Visiting the wolf centre in Haliburton is an important step in helping people to understand the wolf. For centuries the human race has feared the wolf and unapologetically hunted it almost to extinction. Wolves are not the evil creature that we have been led to believe. They are more afraid of humans and are more likely to flee than attack and there has actually never been a confirmed report of a healthy wolf attacking a human. The only cases of wolf attacks have come from either rabid wolves or a wolf/dog mixed race. Truthfully there have been more dog attacks than wolf attacks.

It is only $9.00 to visit the Wolf Centre. It is worth it to take a day or two and stay up in Central Ontario. It is a beautiful location consisting of 60 lakes and thousands of acres of forest. It is a wild country where moose and bears roam freely and you will see otters, deer, porcupine, grouse and great blue herons and many more. Stay in rustic cabins, pitch a tent or find a nearby resort. You can find something for everyone in Ontario.

The Basics Of Residential Wind Power

By David Glen

If you live in a region where the prevailing winds are regular and relatively strong, then you can probably install a residential wind turbine to save a great deal on your electrical energy costs. A wind turbine can help you to use less power from your local utility company, especially when used in conjunction with photovoltaic cells. Some people living in areas where conditions are ideal have even managed to go completely off the grid! While that's not possible for most of us, the ability of a wind turbine to turn the kinetic energy of wind into the electrical power you need for your home can save you a substantial amount of money on your energy bills.

Typically, a residential wind power application is served at the same time by the wind turbine and the local utility. If the wind velocity is beneath cut-in speed of seven to ten miles per hour, there will be no output from the turbine and all of the appropriate power is bought from the utility. When wind speeds accelerate, turbine output increases and the load of power purchased from the utility is suitably decreased. When the turbine generates more power than the house needs, the added electricity is sold to the utility.

Small-scale wind systems for remote applications function rather differently. The wind turbine normally lessens electricity bills by half and it's not unusual for wind turbine owners with total-electric homes to have lesser monthly utility bills. The amount of money a small wind turbine will depend upon its cost, the chunk of electricity used, the average wind speed at the site, and other factors pertaining to its usage.

Wind systems are very sensitive to the average wind speed in the area, so if it were a concern, a turbine owner should have at least an average wind speed of 10 miles per hour and be paying at a lesser fee for electricity.

You can easily find out your area's average wind speeds to determine if a wind power system is like to work well for your home. If your area is a breezy one, you may find that you can generate much of your own electrical power by installing a residential wind turbine.

A typical residential wind system makes less noise and does not interfere with a television's reception at all. A wind turbine is easily rigged to virtually any residence without the hassle to change any appliances or wiring. In most cases, the utility will set up a second utility meter to gauge how much excess electricity it is purchasing from the turbine owner.

Complete, ready to install wind turbine systems are readily available, though homeowners can also choose to buy the necessary parts and install it themselves. Purchasing a ready to install system costs a bit more but comes with more comprehensive support if needed. Installing a wind turbine on one's own requires a little more technical know-how, but also a significant savings over a ready to install system. People interested in a residential wind power system should look into the pros and cons of each option for themselves to choose which is best for their needs.

Homeowners can save a lot of money by installing a home wind power generator. These alternative energy technologies have the additional advantage of being environmentally friendly. A wind turbine doesn't produce any pollution and greatly reduces the amount of fossil fuels needed to power your home.

An Introduction To Residential Wind Power

By David Glen

Anywhere that there are relatively strong winds is a good candidate for a wind energy system to partially or even totally replace the power from your local utility. A residential wind turbine can help you to meet the energy needs of your home or business, significantly reducing costs. These turbines may be and often are used along with a solar power system, since many of the parts needed for one are also used for the other. A wind turbine is installed on a tower and transforms the kinetic energy of the wind into electrical energy which may be used to provide power in the home.

The majority of homes which have a residential wind power system use power from the local utility company in addition to their wind turbines. The reason for this is that most wind turbines have a cut-in speed (usually 7 to ten mph). If the wind speed falls below this, then power must be drawn from the local grid. When the wind is moving faster than the cut-in speed, then the turbines begin supplying electricity to the home, reducing the need for electricity from the utility company. If you generate more power than you use, it can be fed back into the power grid - and your utility company will pay you for it!

The typical wind turbine system owner sees a savings of around 50% on their electricity costs; depending on weather conditions and the home's energy needs, this may be slightly more or less.

A wind power system is dependent on the average wind speed in the area where it is installed. Homeowners will find that their turbines yield the best results when installed in areas which see average wind speeds of 10 mph and up.

For most residential wind power systems, the charge of taking wind measurements is not warranted to predict wind turbine performance. However, in some mountainous areas, it may be best to score wind data before securing a system. If a person lives in a place that has sufficient breeze and wind patterns, then producing extra power from a residential wind turbine and supplying electricity to the grid will be fast and easy.

Residential wind systems are quiet and don't interfere with television or other electronic signals and can be installed with relative ease. Your local utility may even install an additional meter in your home to measure the excess electricity your wind power system is feeding back into the power grid.

Most wind turbine system dealers provide either complete ready-to-install applications or the option to buy directly from a store and let a would-be turbine owner do the installation instead. While the first option offers more customer support from the company, self-installation offers considerable savings and a technical understanding of the turbine. Soon-to-be owners can discuss the choices available with manufacturers to settle on which method best suits their financial accounts and skills.

Homeowners can save a lot of money by installing a home wind power generator. These alternative energy technologies have the additional advantage of being environmentally friendly. A wind turbine doesn't produce any pollution and greatly reduces the amount of fossil fuels needed to power your home.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 Free Movies

By Janice Davies

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 movie is a thriller that grabs you from the word go. John Travolta and Denzel Washington, two of Hollywoods most famous actors, star in this exciting film which is a 1974 movie remake. Tony Scott, the director of this movie, has made a few changes to the story, giving it a personal treatment that adds much to the movie in terms of suspense and nervous excitement.

Walter (Denzel Washington) holds the post of a dispatcher with the Subway Control Center of New York. When he finds the Pelham 1 2 3 has ground to a halt for no apparent technical reason, he attempts to check with the engine driver through radio.

On the Pelham 1 2 3, John Travolta has effectively taken control and announces the passengers as his hostages. Travoltas character, Ryder, demands that the New York City mayor cough up $10 million within an hour or be prepared to watch as he slays one person every minute when the ransom period has elapsed.

Spell-binding performances by both mega stars keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Washingtons understated portrayal of the dispatcher is the perfect foil to Travoltas exquisite depiction of a brutal yet intelligent crook.

John Turturro who plays a short cop role as a negotiator also manages to set the screen on fire with his intense acting. Unfortunately though his is a minute role cut short by the terrorists unwillingness to negotiate with anyone but Walter.

Throughout the movie the action scenes are intense and the movie grips you as you keep wondering if one of the hostages is going to get killed or not. The movie also manages to balance itself well walking the line without going over the top and maintaining a realistic approach.

The Manufacturing of Leadership

By James Pynn

It is unfortunate that war has so greatly shaped our ideas of leadership. Over and above thinking of leadership as some martial characteristics, it is essential to think about of it as a means of creating and expanding the future. As Edwin H. Friedman stated, "Leadership can be thought of as a capacity to define oneself to others in a way that clarifies and expands a vision of the future." To be sure, leadership is not merely "leading" -- it is creating an environment that nurtures communication and effective problem solving.

Effective leadership should not succumb to mere theatrics. The rousing pre-game speech or jingoistic battle-charge lecture are prime examples of how leadership has been co-opted by more militaristic factions of Western society. Indeed, manufacturing consent for any unpopular legislation is always framed as a "battle" or "fight." The war on drugs, the fight for security, the war on terror -- these are all manufactured attempts to lead people and create popular consensus.

Rather than destroying, leading -- or leadership for that matter -- should be synonymous with creating. Creating an environment or dialogue is far more important than the reckless battlefield charge against the enemy position. Indeed, leadership should work in tandem with diplomacy. Understand the value of diplomatic solutions is essential if the base reaction of violence and military intervention are to be circumvented.

Leaders must elevate. That is, there is a kind of elevation of character engendered by effective leadership. The individual willingly and wittingly gives him or herself to the cause. From many one is born. This is the ultimate manifestation of well-considered leadership: when a group of individuals is willing to move above and beyond their habitual routines to correct or address a cause.

The path to leadership knows no gender, no sexual preference, no race, color or creed. Leaders must lead people. This means standing firm in the face of those who would revel at the chance to bring you down. You must convince, not cajole. Often the road to success is littered with the remains of those who would merely placate the public. True leaders must be true to themselves. They must know their topics, their purposes, and do their best to transcend their words to become beacons of hope.

Reduce Household Carbon Emissions By Saving Water

By Philip Youngwood

Improving water efficiency through simple measures could help homeowners reduce their carbon emissions by up to 30%, a new report by energy experts has advised. The news has been welcomed by green issues and environmental campaigners.

Last year the Government set out ambitious plans to cut UK CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 to benefit the environment. Considering more than a quarter of the UK's carbon emissions comes from household waste, suggestions from the report could represent a significant portion of carbon emission savings.

The joint report carried out by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) and the Environment Agency outlined a number of guidelines that could help homeowners to achieve better water efficiency.

The guidelines include a number of water saving tips such as lagging pipes with foam, low-flow taps and washing dishes in a washing-up bowl rather than under a running tap. These measures should result in cheaper energy bills and water utilities as well as helping to reduce CO2 emissions.

Homeowners could also try trading in their old white goods including old washing machines and dishwashers for newer, more energy efficient machines. Updating bathroom facilities such as shower heads or toilets to designs that use much less water will also benefit water efficiency and bills.

Savings achieved through these guidelines could net the average household up to 225 a year in savings off their electricity and water bills.

Magda Styles, water and waste strategy manager at EST, spoke to the Guardian commenting "We're not trying to make people endure hardship and do away with hot water. In most cases, it's a simple prevention of waste."

Homeowners are not the only beneficiaries from these water saving tips, as the report estimates businesses could achieve a massive 3.5 billion worth of energy bill savings through implementing these practices into their day to day activities.

Checks On Business Accounting Management And Educational Openings

By Don Bennett

To be successful in economics education, you should have high grades in mathematics and the innate ability to memorize and comprehend philosophical theories. Those with quantitative skills, critical thinking skills and a passion for statistics will do well in the economics research industry. Economic indicators that business checks, for better or worst, are the leading indicators as well as economists' forecasts.

A good economist is able to take large amounts of information, mathematical figures and philosophical concepts and break them down into rational theories, forecasts and reports. Individuals with their backgrounds in economics education will be looking at supply and demand, distribution of resources, business checks on labor trends, prices and economic policy. Pursuing a career in basic economics is not easy, but it is very rewarding.

For more career opportunities, students pursue economics education to get their master's degrees. According to www.payscale.com, the most popular jobs for those with a degree in economics are Corporate Economists ($55,000), Economists ($50,000), Senior Financial Analysts ($62,000), VP of Sales ($80,000), Marketing Research Analysts ($60,000), Associate Business Analysts ($80,000) and Pricing Analysts ($60,000). Students pursuing their master's will take advanced statistics, math and theory. They'll gain hands-on experience through co-ops with institutions and will begin to follow a narrower path or area of interest. They may concentrate on finance, law, applied economics, analysis, health economics or economics history.

Most of the growth in economics education based careers will come in the private sector, as scientific research firms and consulting firms expand. More and more emphasis is placed on statistical analysis to predict market trends for businesses. While the federal government has cut some positions, more are expected to open up in local government. Competition is fierce for these top-paying jobs, particularly for those with only a bachelor's degree from an economics college.

Real-world experience is the best way to find direction with your new economics degree. Professors encourage students to read as many economics books, order newspaper articles and magazine spreads as you can. The Economist and the Wall Street Journal are resources that every economics major should know inside and out. Seminars are another way to discover relevant business checks on issues and topics in the field and stay ahead of the competition.
