Why do Dissertations Need Proofreading?

By Nick Sanders

Students are often unaware that submitting their dissertation paper without having it proofread and edited will mean that their work could contain a number of errors and omissions.

No doubt you have taken a long time to plan, research and write your dissertation topic. You will have probably missed out on family dinners, nights out with friends, and stayed up until the early hours of the morning trying to finish sections of your dissertation. You will have worked hard, exhausting every opportunity to excel and add as much detail and understanding to your work as you can.

The big question now is: are you sure every little mistakes has been ironed out? Does your work flow and is your content concise and breeds clarity? Is the tone of your paper on the right track, and have you check your spelling and grammar is correct? If you're unsure about these, then you are going to want to have your work proofread. Having an expert take a look through your work will ensure that it becomes what you wanted it to be in the first instance.

You don't have to have a professional edit your work, as a friend or coworker can look through your work and offer you advice - the main point is that someone else should read through your dissertation to ensure there aren't any mistakes. Having spent a lot of time on research and writing your paper means that you are too close to even spot simple mistakes.

When you read over your own work your mind will play tricks on you, making your work appear to be something that is isn't. You will have written numerous essays and reports whilst in academia and you will be used to the style and tone of your writing - believing it to be clear and concise when it is actually a little muddled. Thus you won't notice simple mistakes in your own written work, simply because you already know what the details are.

When you are choosing a proofreader to proofread and edit your document, you should look at the company or individual in regard to their experience. This is through whether they have experience editing and proofreading dissertations, and if they have experience in your field of research. Your main aim when choosing a proofreader will be to make sure they will not only check for spelling and grammatical errors, but also that they are checking your work for consistency, clarity, tone and structure of argument.

If you choose to have your dissertation edited, then you will be advised what changes would be appropriate to increase the readability and style of your work. You will want to ensure that your paper is the best it can be before submission, so having the editor edit your sentences will mean that you will be able to submit your work and make maximum impact.
