The Symbolism of Military Medals

By James Morgan

To millions of Americans who have served our country in combat or other forms, military medals mean so much more than a piece of shiny medal that is attached to a piece of ribbon.

Civilians might not be able to fully understand what military medals and military ribbons represent. They symbolize something greater than the norm. They represent chivalry, honor and heroism.

These symbols of honor are designed to be worn on the military uniform, and under no circumstances are they to be worn with another outfit. They are sometimes referred to as a military decoration.

Whether it was special clothing, bejeweled necklaces or tattoos, outstanding soldiers have been recognized for their bravery throughout the time of history. Since the beginnings of the very invention of battle, soldiers who exhibited a certain type of dedication was honored with a symbol of some sort.

When awarding a precious symbol such as these to a member of the military forces, strict criteria was and is enforced. Today, the military goes through long proceedings to decide who is worthy of the honor. In essence, the military is looking for a genuine hero.

Deriving from Greek mythology, the term 'hero' or 'heroine' originally referred to a cult. Such figures as Heracles, Perseus and Achilles may be examples of members of these cults, which were significant in ancient Greek religion.

Later, the term 'hero' was used to describe people who displayed courage and the will for self sacrifice in the face of adversity, weakness and danger for the greater good of their people. Often without thinking twice, men and woman have instinctively put themselves in harm's way for the sake of a life, cause or people.

Hero's are recognized and honored today, just as they were in ancient Greek times. As you can see, outstanding selflessness and superior moral qualities are characteristics that are worth recognizing.
