Nebraska enthusiasts have witnessed this exact scenario before during the previous four seasons.
There were the Texas and USC situations in 2006, USC yet again in '07, and then Virginia Tech this past season in Lincoln, all having the same outcome - the "Nebraska not ready for big athletes."
The last time the Huskers bested a ranked team on the road was during November '06, when the Huskers beat then-ranked No. 24 Texas A&M, 28-27, in Texas.
But that was a different era, a different coach, and, predominantly, different players.
Everybody knows that when you play a Frank Beamer franchise you must anticipate nice execution on both ends of the field, plus imposing play by special teams. They displayed that once more in their 1st game this season versus Alabama.
The Crimson Tide outperformed Virginia Tech by practically a 2-to-one margin, but were only leading by a FG late in the fourth quarter due to a kickoff return for a TD.
The one thing that Husker Nation has noticed with this year's franchise is that the botched assignments and poorly executed plays have just about disappeared. There is less thinking on the defense and consequently, a handful of plays are being made because the players are analyzing and acting on this rather than thinking.
Head coach Bo Pelini currently sees a franchise that totally understands the importance of a hard day's work.
This season, the team understands what it takes to be a winning team. It knows what its role is on both sides of the ball.
I really do believe that the Nebraska Cornhuskers have finally broken through, and have the perfect players in the best positions pull off their first huge road victory in 3 seasons.
I see the Nebraska football team coming out on top in a defensive, close game in OT by a three point margin.
