The Advantages of Earning a Degree Online

By Laura Greene

With modern technology, and our increasingly busy lives, online college degree programs are quickly growing in popularity. In fact, there are now more adults taking classes online than there are sitting in classrooms.

Many people are unable to pursue a traditional, campus-based college degree because of family commitments, demanding jobs, and/or other obligations. For them, online education is a great option, an option that allows them to achieve professional goals which otherwise might not be possible.

But, with online education, students can make academics fit their schedule. That means that anyone who is motivated to do so can find the time to earn a degree.

Students in online degree programs often talk about the time and expense they save by "attending classes" in their homes rather than commuting to campus. They greatly appreciate both.

And, they love the fact that they don't have to worry about being closed out of classes that are already filled or the scheduling conflicts often experienced by traditional students.

Because online students can enroll in any courses they need, whenever they wish, they are frequently able to earn degrees much more quickly than their counterparts enrolled in campus-based degree programs. As a result, they have the potential to reach their professional career goals more quickly.

Discomfort with technology used to prevent some adults from earning online degrees, but those days are virtually gone. Because almost all jobs now require at least as much computer skill as are needed to take classes online, most adults now feel far more comfortable sitting at a computer than they do in a classroom.

And, with the widespread use of webinars and discussion boards in online classes, students no longer have to worry about losing the human interaction that used to be available only in classrooms.

In the last ten years, online degree programs have really come of age: they are no longer an interesting educational experiment. Instead, they have become both an excellent way for busy adults to acquire a high quality education and a credential that will help them move forward professionally at an accelerated rate.
