Homeschooling too Tough? Try an Accredited Home School Program

By Jenny Rantoul

There are many, many reasons parents feel it is important to teach their children at home and get them out of a public school. If you feel that way, and you have done your homework, maybe you are hesitating because you're afraid you aren't qualified to be your children's teacher. In time, and with some study and practice, these fears will probably go away. In the meantime, some parents decide to use an accredited home school program.

Through a course of studies downloaded on the computer or received in the mail, your child would be studying similar subjects he or she would have been assigned in a public school. An accredited homeschool program is generally a series of self study lessons with parental supervision and involvement.

Last year my daughter was enrolled in an accredited home school program. She received assignments and I was responsible for supervising her studies. We spent a lot of time talking about her assignments and working on them together. A good friend of hers during this period was bedridden for five months with an illness. She received assignments from the public school and these were supervised by a teacher there. They call this their home study program " designed for children who will miss classes for long periods. You can see the two are not the same thing. One is supervised by the parent and one is supervised by the public school.

There are accredited homeschool programs for children of all ages. There are preschool programs all the way through high school. The cost of these schools are generally not expensive, so they can be used by folks rich and poor. And while children are receiving a structured education, they are doing it in comfortable surroundings with their mothers and fathers.

Surely you can see the advantages of using an accredited home school program. Imagine the strong bonds you will form with your child as you teach them. You will have direct control over their learning because while you follow a curriculum, you are not strictly bound by it.

We live in a subdivision that is wooded and hilly. The public school my daughter would attend is about 12 miles away. Using an accredited homeschool program has given us a significant savings in our transportation costs. It also has made life much easier because she spends about four to five hours a day with her studies, and I supervise that. The thing is that four to five hours can be spent anytime. Now I do try to keep her study time structured, but we can adjust her schedule as needs arise " we aren't tied to the same clock every day.

In the United States parents are concerned more and more about gang violence and drugs in the public schools. And while I don't want to turn my back on the problem, I also know my first priority is my own child. My daughter has prospered and flourished since enrolling in an accredited home school program. It is no wonder that more and more parents are choosing this as their alternative educational choice.
