Education and Six Sigma

By Craig Calvin

Most institutions both for profit and education need the same input for success, the employee and student performance. Professionals within the education field are always looking for and putting in place new process ideas in order to have the students be more productive.

Learning aids, new teaching techniques, etc are just some of the devices used. As the devices and processes are introduced the student learning is increased which in turn raises the institutions reputation. The use of Six Sigma can help with the process improvement within education.

The methodology was created first for achievement of business goals in industry. This concept looks first at the customer, this makes defects in a system become obvious, which in turn points to expenses within the system. A culture which is open to change is very important to the Six Sigma accomplishment. So sometimes there may need to be a culture change within the institution to reach the goals of the Six Sigma implementation.

Six Sigma is the premier tool for quality management. To address the educational side, teachers represent the employees and parents become the customers. The issue or problem has to be identified before the Six Sigma program can be rolled out. When that problem is noted, then the methodology can be put into motion to help reduce the problem or get rid of it altogether.

Senior level enthusiasm for the Six Sigma project is extremely important for success. Within the process, innovation and creativity are encouraged by Six Sigma methodology, and a module is created to encourage proper communication between teacher and student. Within the educational setting the application of Six Sigma brings out the positive corrections of teaching methods and a positive outcome from that. Therefore, with proper teaching methods in place, learning is increased and the goals are met.
