Hogs 4 Hokies 2009 Ride to Virginia Tech

By Eddie Kirchen

The annual ride to Blacksburg VA started in Manassas VA on May 2 this year. Over 100 motorcyclists raised over $10,000 dollars to fund the 32 Named Endowment Fund, a scholarship fund in memory of the 32 victims of the Virginia Tech shooting. The scholarship fund provides scholarship funds in the name of each of the victims of the tragic event.

At 9am. we pulled out of the Manassas Mall parking lot after registering at the Hooters nearby. There were a variety of bikes, with Harleys predominating the procession.

We rode to Charlottesville where we were joined by a police escort and met up with additional riders. We formed up and rode in parade formation to Shenandoah Harley-Davidson, 213 Rolling Thunder Lane in Staunton, VA. The dealership provided lunch and discount coupons where the discount could be credited to the 32 Named Endowment Fund.

The event organizer, Frank Salzano lead the parade procession on his Harley. Frank, as a VT alumni, has had his bike customized in the VT colors, maroon and orange and a large VT flag flying from his motorcycle. It was an impressive parade with the four motorcycle police escorts and Frank leading the way with over 100 bikes following. Once we reached the Virginia Tech campus we rode past Deacon Mike Ellerbrock who blessed each motorcyclist as we passed alternately on each side of him. We formed two lines pointing to the memorial for the fallen students for a ceremony and presentation of the check for the scholarship fund.

A quote from Frank's website says it all. Lets remember always the 32 lost, 17 injured, and countless other innocent victims affected forever.

Hogs 4 Hokies will be an annual event, so plan to join in next year. You can learn more at the website listed below
