Women Who Lead

By James G. Pynn

Why follow the leader when you can be the leader? If an accredited, proven leadership program is appealing to you, you would be hard pressed to find a more remarkable example of a program that takes its coursework as seriously as the Women's Leadership Program. There is a very powerful aspect of the program and it is one that has a great deal of relevance today.

There is a strong push to tie the different course work together by bringing the students into contact with strong women from their respective fields of study. Within the WLP Program, you will find everything from special events to guest speakers to field experiences. One way that leadership is taught is definitely through example, and if there is any sort of understanding between them, the program is certainly a success!

There is a belief that leaders are born not made, and while some people are more predisposed to the idea of being leaders than others, the truth is that leadership is something that is taught and learned. Only when people are given an understanding of what is possible can they then excel, and these are the things that set the WLP apart. Through both examples and through hard work and self-determination, this program has goals towards giving people a grasp of what has come before while always looking at the future.

The WLP curriculum is divided amongst politics, science, arts and culture and economic development -- with a good dose of humanities and writing courses to round out the liberal arts background. Underlying all of this however, is a strong dedication to the idea of women as leaders and instruction in such. There is a very strong thread that ties all of these courses together and makes the entire concept of leadership a very relevant one when it comes to giving the freshmen students and incoming idea of what is going on with regards to the different kind of options ahead.

No matter where you stand in politics, religion, personal beliefs or culture, you will find that leadership and the creation of leaders is something that you need to think about. The WLP is a year long academic program geared towards incoming freshmen students, and it takes on the challenge of probing such issues as the role of women leaders, the expression of women's leadership and how it is exercised and how it has functioned in a variety of different fields. This program will take students through two courses and a symposium each term at the Mount Vernon campus, and with the resources of Washing at their very fingertips, they can learn a great deal about both leadership and the place that women take within it.
