The Princess Diaries movie comes as a fresh breath of air in these times where movies with explicit scenes and crass humor are being dished out every other day. She has never seen her distant grandmother before and is even more shocked when her grandmother introduces herself as the Queen of Genovia, a European country. If this was not enough, she also tells Mia that she is going to be the Princess of Genovia since there is no real heir to the throne after Mias father had died. The movie then takes you through Mias preparation of acting princess-like though she is actually far from it. She must also decide if she wants this glorious title throughout her life or not and must decide by the night of an imminent ball.
Though this movie is not exactly surprising or original, as it follows the same old tested formula, it is still charming and manages to warm your heart. What makes it work is the simple, but beautiful story. The movie is bubbly, spirited and a feel-good kind with many parts that are typical of romantic comedies.
Apart from the revival of the lovable Julie Andrews that gives the role of Mias grandmother and extra touch of class, the person that steals the show is Anne Hathaway who has shades of Julia Roberts. This is particularly impressive considering this is Annes debut film. Viewers are able to see Hathaways immense talents almost immediately when she does both the comedy and drama parts so effectively and this makes you feel the whole plot is actually real. She is without a doubt a future star in the making and it will be interesting to see how she does in her upcoming projects.
