By Phineas Duru

Lot's of people these days are using solar lights rather than regular lights to illuminate their homes. Not just on the interior of their homes but on the outside as well. These small pieces of equipment are starting to pop up everywhere and they are no longer bulky or ugly looking. This is good considering the flock of buyers these days.

What is Solar light? Solar lights are solar powered lights. Whether they choose to use traditional bulbs, led's, or another form of illumination is up to the designer. Technological advancement these days have gotten to the point where they are very small, sometimes no bigger than a large coffee cup. Yes! not the bulb, the entire unit itself. Anyways, with the small compact size prices have dropped as well.

Have you taken a closer look at them? ( call it a sneak preview of your neighbors yard) A typical solar light setup will have the bulb enclosed in a white or clear plastic case. There may be a case with the solar panels on the individual lights, or they may run on a string to a solar panel that's put somewhere unobtrusive. The good news is either of these methods can get the solar lights to work anywhere around your house. None the less, you must want the solar panel facing the sun, so generally towards the south in the US. Most will run for about 4 to 5 hours off of a charge in the daytime, some can last longer. It depends on how much power they've accumulated during the day.

A great number of people are buying these lights this summer for numerous reasons. Solar lights do not ever use power from the grid making it a cost free way to light your gardens, pathways and lawns. They also are rather convenient and can be placed almost anywhere provided there's sunlight shinning through. Aside from this, the fact that they don't drain power from the grid means there's more power to go around for things like air conditioning. Not deprived use of our electrical gadgets due to cost of electricity is very important during the summer months especially for those of us who have health issues.

For Many that like to keep their yards and gardens attractive, the other appeal of solar lights is that they've gotten more beautiful and attractive. Interestingly, past are the days when solar lights proclaimed you to be the biggest environerd on your block. These days, the buyers see financial value and beauty. They are now much smaller, compact, and much more attractive, and can grace most home or garden decors, and can work well on porches and decks.

Are you creative? Yes! They also allow homeowners to express some creativity, by coming in different colors and in different brightnesses and sizes. They can be used for decorative displays, porch and patio lighting, and or pathway illumination. They are also very good security lights when tied to a motion sensor, and used as a security device.

Considering the fact that home improvement budgets have been slashed with the current economic downturn, these lights have proven to be the exception to the rule - they are beautiful, elegant, affordable and, flexible. Moreover, they allow home owners to express their creativity on a tight budget. They also don't have recurring costs in the form of ongoing electric bills. Many home owner have considered them to be the harbinger of things to come for self powered home improvement.

The bottom line- solar lights are a great way to save lots of money. They are small, cheap, and efficient. They also do not take up a lot of space and are easily put up and maintained. Plus, they look pretty nice with the proper complimentary backgrounds.
