Is The Online School System Right For You?

By Elizabeth Paulson

There are a lot of ideas out there about what it's like to get an education from an online school. Some of them are right on, others are just old notions that many people refuse to let go of, no matter how much the actual schools have changed. Thanks to our modern technology, anyone can have a complete experience with an online school.

The image of an online school is that it is just another kind of homeschooling. People have assumed that only people with physical or financial difficulties would actually bother with. They didn't think that a full curriculum could be delivered online.

Today, that is just no longer the case. The main reason people now go with an online school is simply to fit their education into a busy schedule. They now have the ability to learn around the clock and in any location. It doesn't matter if it's a young student that moves around a lot or a full-time professional going for another degree, an online curriculum can make it possible to receive a full education.

At an online school, students have constant access to all the materials they need for the class. They won't be forced to lug around a heavy textbook just to squeeze in some extra study-time. Anytime is study-time when you just have to log onto the Internet to access your coursework.

The old ideas about an online school just don't apply anymore. Studying independently doesn't mean you will be in a social vacuum. There are numerous forums and chat groups that students can use to meet their fellow learners, and develop relationships that will stick with them long after the curriculum is over. Who needs class reunions? You never have to lose contact with your school buddies because they can just stay on your "friends list."

Many of the biases that exist in traditional classrooms and make it hard for some students to participate in a class don't exist in the online world. The anonymity of the Internet based classes mean that there is no longer the "cute one" or the "loud one" or even the "needy one." Students are graded on their level of participation, and only that.

An online school also makes it possible for students that simply want to supplement their traditional education. If they are looking for extra classes or need to fulfill a certain requirement but can't manage it at the time the normal class is offered, online classes are a good option.

Sometimes, students just aren't morning people. At an online school, though, they can take their classes when they are fully awake and alert, and it only has to last as long as their attention span. Online schools are convenient and affordable, and very different from what they once were.
