Information That You Want To Know About Medical School Interview Questions

By Sue Cranner

Being asked for interview at med school is a brilliant feeling. However, despite all your efforts securing this is just the beginning of a long hard process. It is common knowledge that medical school interview questions are hard; but through a bit of planning, there is no reason why they should prove to be a stumbling block.

Before anything else, it is important to understand that medical school interview questions are not designed to trap you; far from it in fact. They are designed to give the best candidates the best chance at being successful and, whilst certain elements in your answers will be looked for; there are no definitive right or wrong answers that can be given.

Each school will have its own way of doing things of course, but certain questions, (or certainly variations on a theme), crop up year on year. Below are a few of the most likely; and a little advice as to how to tailor your response.

Why do you want to enter medical school? - This is generally one of the first questions answered, and set to illicit a response that shows interest for medicine. If you are serious, your natural passion should come through. This also gives you an opportunity to show interest for any particular areas you could decide to pursue in the future; another way to impress the panel.

Why do you want to study at our medical school? - One of the most important questions you are likely to be asked; get this wrong at your peril! You should have researched the school well of course; its history, culture and so on. But you should also be able to equate reasons as to why they are your choice.

Describe your best qualities? - A favorite in any interview, and one that demands honesty. Do not be arrogant; and explain why and how you have developed these qualities. In preparation; ask close relations what they think your strengths are.

Describe your worst qualities? - Possibly one of the toughest questions that could ever be asked. Again, honesty is key and, an absolute no is to suggest you do not have any; we all do! Explain what areas you are weak in, and importantly, how you are confronting these and righting them. Again, seek the consul of those around you for advice.

These are just a tiny fraction of questions you are likely to be asked and, it is likely even these could be asked in different ways. The secret to success with medical school interview questions is to prepare for them; practice for them, keep answers brief and to the point, and be prepared for that curve ball.
