Beat The Hot Summer Heat with Lower Electric Bills

By J.C.Dyess, Jr.

Temperatures soar in the Texas summer, and many of us run our air conditioners full blast, but that means high cooling bills. Can you beat the heat without breaking the bank? If you just change a few things about your behavior and your home, the answer is yes. Let's take a look at how to do it.

First, remember that more and more people are getting interested in using less electricity and conversing energy. Consider what you can do to save the environment and to make sure that you use less power. Overall, this is going to be more practical for you and you will also find that the more you use your air conditioner, the more your bills are going to soar! This is one reason to find alternate ways to cool down.

Try keeping shades and blinds closed during the hot part of the day, and leave most lights off, using only the ones you need at the moment. The sun and electric lighting can both add pretty significant amounts of heat to a room. Keep in mind that heat rises. That means that if you're up really early in the morning you can open upstairs and downstairs windows to let the cool air rush in and the hot air rush out. Close them just as soon as it starts to warm up, however, and just leave the upper windows open. That way, upstairs rooms don't turn into a muggy sauna.

Also think about when you do your laundry. Make sure that you don't run your washer and dryer during the day. You can just run your washer in the early morning and look into line drying your laundry throughout the day, or you might want to simply run your appliances at night. Remember that these devices put out a lot of heat and also use up a lot of energy, so be conservative.

When you need to cool a specific area, remember that you should keep it as tight and as contained as you can. Getting air circulation going is great, but remember that not all houses are equipped for it. When there is a smaller area to cool, make sure that you keep it enclosed. Also remember that you should run your air conditioner at a steady level; this will make it more efficient and you will find that you should not turn it on and off. Also remember that you should still run your fans when you have the air conditioning because they can move the cool air through your home.

When you want to beat the heat, one of the most important keys for you to keep in mind is that you should head outside. Don't let yourself get too used to the air conditioned coolness. Also remember that you can take cold showers, drink a lot of water and stick to eating meals that are cold or do not require a lot of cooking. When you head out of doors, stay in the shade and pop indoors periodically!
