Tips on Choosing an American College or University

By Ryan Winter

Once you have completed your life at school, you will probably want to be successfully admitted into a reputable college. And even after completing your Bachelor degree, your aim may be to carry on in higher studies. This will be the most important decision of your life, as your professional career will depend on what decision you make about the college you will choose.

You are most likely going to be in a dilemma when you look at the different colleges across America. However, this article will cover the various problems you may face when selecting an American college; this is shown through 5 important tips to overcome these:

1. Put a limit on your search - The US consists of more than 2,000 reputable colleges or universities, so you are required to put a limit on your searches, as it might place you in a dilemma on which institute to join. It also increases your chances of gaining admission, and moreover, saves a lot of your precious time. To start your search you will have to decide on the climatic conditions, preference of location, reputation and cost.

After deciding on the above, you should make a top ten list of the colleges that fall into what you want from a potential college. When you limit the list to ten colleges, you will not only help increase your chances of admission, but it will make it easier for you to be accepted and avoid resulting confusion.

2. Consider the costs - which will include living expenses and tuition fees, and these will be different at all of the different colleges; yet, most will have high living costs as they are based in and around cities.

If you are considering using a loan or indeed winning a scholarship, then you should be aware that most of the loans and scholarships are only offered to citizens of the United States. Also, if you are planning to earn extra money by working, then you could be in for a shock as non American citizens are restricted from the amount they can work. The main thing you should consider is the amount of money you will be taking with you.

3. Look at colleges that have other international students - Finding a college with other international students who are already studying will be a positive aspect when you are selecting your top ten list. These individual institutes that have a large number of foreign students will mean that you should have no trouble settling in. Also, this means that you will have some assurance that other international students have adjusted to the surrounding environment.

4. Visit college campuses - After choosing a list of colleges, you should take at least one trip to the campus. When you are visiting, you will be able to feel the environment around and 'see yourself' there.

5. Preparation is Key - There are a number of different colleges in America that will require candidates to go through an entrance exam. Therefore, you may rely on the performance you give in this test, on whether you are accepted or not. Also, you will need to ensure that you have all the correct documentation before travelling to the US.
