Give Up Plastics!

By Anne Tong

Plastic is perhaps one of the worst chemical materials that humans have invented in recent decades. Plastic is generally non-biodegradable. Thus, it causes serious environmental problems and posts huge biological hazard to living organisms. A huge amount of plastic wastes is being created every day. The resulting pollution is destroying our ecosystem, with the ocean being one of the largest victims.

Plastic is being used worldwidely as it is cheap, easy to make ad long-lasting. However, plastic places great damage to the environment and people always dump them also because of its features, especially for the carry bags and disposable bottles.

Since plastic is long lasting and non-biodegradable, it stays on our planet for a very long time. The pollution that it causes is centralized in urban areas due to the rapid growth of urbanization.

As synthetic polymers can be shaped into any figure, some are formed into thin films which can be made into enduring carrybags and packing materials. While these non-biodegradable materials are dumped, they persist in the soil without changing form.

According to the latest statistics, the world's annual output of plastics comes to approximately 105 million tonnes and is continued to be rising. In particular, a person from the western and European countries uses 70 kg of plastics per year on average. In contrast, India appears to be a greener country with its annual output being 2.5 million tonnes and annual per-capita use being 4 kg only.

There is more and more plastic waste in the ocean, nearly 85% of stuff consists of traces of polymers were found on the beaches. And these rubbish found mostly is packaging materials.

This is a great peril to the life and habitat of marine wild life, especially turtles and seabirds. Somehow, plastic pollution is more dangerous than ozone hole and global warming.

To keep away from this destructive threat, it is necessary not to use the non-biodegradable carry bags. Replacing any plastics in any places at anytime by durable and reusable jute bags and canvas bags can certainly help. In addition, manufacturing companies ought to use brown paper or other alternatives to pack and wrap cartons.
