Green Committee Training

By R Michael Richmond

The lack of reliable information and the need for a clear plan for corporate Greening, is probably the biggest hurdle to properly Green a business. No one should question the reality that every business will eventually become a Green business. How to get to a Green certification is a journey into an unknown world with very little instruction. Selecting a Green officer inside the business is the common approach. But what qualifies a worker to take on the technical duties of a Green officer or even to contribute to a Green Committee?

Green officers should not merely be appointed, or fall into the job because of a "Better-than-Average" environmental aptitude. A Green officer should be like other valued duties in the company. These workers need to be informed, trained, and clear on how to accomplish their job. Unfortunately, this knowledge has not been previously available in the marketplace until now.

The amount of knowledge required and the processes needed for Greening a business is staggering. A Green business often does not have the time or the talent to properly operate a Green program. The task of correctly Greening a business tends to default most businesses into a weak program that feels very much like Greenwashing. Greenwashing, or "Token Green" infers that a business has done the minimum possible to merit the Green title, but the company represents a hyped value of its environmental commitment.

The Green Business League has trained hundreds of Certified Green Consultants throughout the U.S. and Canada, and now does similar programs in other countries as well. The Green Business League is now offering Green Officer Training for anyone who is presently or hopes to be an in-house Green officer. Green Officer Training is offered in live two and a half day classes or online. The live classes are highly recommended whenever there is a choice.

The Green Officer Training starts out with a foundation in the concepts of Green, sustainability, pollution, and conservation. These are called the "Four Corners of Environmentalism." The program covers global warming, carbon credits, indoor air quality, paperless office, and the Green Supply Chain. Offering more than 300 pages of material and an immense amount of collateral supporting information, this class is remarkable in its ability to provide a broad spectrum of on-target information.

Information gradually gives way to the practical side of a step-by-step process for Greening any kind of business. Unlike the LEED program, the business need not own the building. The business may rent, lease, or own the facilities. This is because the program is keyed on "Green Practices," meaning the daily operation/function of the business.

The surprising element for Green Officer training is that Going Green can and will produce a potentially strong revenue savings. Green is also about efficiencies, and newer approaches to Greening a business includes a variety of solutions that will definitely save the company money and improve employee performance.

Finally, the Green Officer Training provides a clear path to Green business certification. Every Green practice adopted by the business has a point value. At 100 points that company can apply to the Green Business League for certification under this trademark program. All in all, this is the solution that cuts through the ambiguity and provides a means for an "Authentically Green" business.
